Børgefjell: a majestic mountain wilderness

Literally “on the other side of the mountains” from the national park from the last post, towards the border with Sweden, there is our next hero – Børgefjell. This place – to be honest – is not “touristy”, there is practically no appropriate infrastructure, special preparation is needed to find the way and a place to stay. Nevertheless, experienced travelers recommend not to limit the exploration of this place to one day. A few days spent in Børgefjell will provide rich sensory experiences.

Børgefjell National Park was established in 1963 as the second national park in Norway. In 1932, the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) decided that there would be no cabins or marked trails in the park because the area should be protected as wilderness.
Børgefjell is a magnificent mountain desert where high peaks intersect with rushing rivers and mountain plateaus are dotted with pristine lakes.
There is only one type of fish in Børgefjell – trout, famous throughout the country for its unique taste.
The mountain streams here are so pure that you can quench your thirst in springs created by nature anywhere in the park.
The two famous rivers Namsen and Vefsna originate here. The watercourses are diverse and following them will provide unforgettable moments. One of the many attractions is the Storfossen waterfall on the Jengel River.
Viewpoint Børgefjell in Røyrvik offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountain peaks. You will have peaks in two national parks in sight, including the queen of Børgefjell – Kvigtind (1,699 m above sea level).
July and August are the best months for hiking in Børgefjell. Entering through the official gate, you will find marked hiking trails, but they gradually disappear – and you will have to find your own way.
The Arctic fox was protected in 1930, but the population has not increased, and there are now only a few animals left. The Arctic fox has managed to survive in Børgefjell without interventions such as feeding or introducing animals.
