Winter bat count summary
Winter bat counts in the Romincka Forest Landscape Park and the surrounding area have been conducted for over 20 years. During this time, many facilities serving as wintering roosts for these mammals were renovated, and the number of bats detected during winter surveys increased significantly.
Counting bats in the winter season of 2023-2024 brought another record. In February 2024, in bunkers and cellars in the Romincka Forest Landscape Park and the surrounding area, 992 bats were found, belonging to the following species: western barbastelle Barbastella barbastellus, northern bat Eptesicus nilssonii, brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus, Daubenton’s bat Myotis daubentonii, Natterer’s bat Myotis nattereri and Brandt’s bat /whiskered bat Myotis brandtii /M. mystacinus.
As part of the project, in the summer of 2022, we carried out renovations in 36 facilities to keep them in good technical condition and provide appropriate conditions for hibernating bats. The necessary construction works were carried out and missing/damaged doors and window covers were inserted/replaced. In buildings with a small number of crevices and other nooks and crannies where hibernating bats like to hide, perforated bricks and boards were hung.
